How to remove dark circles?

The area around your eye is prone to dryness and the muscles there get worn down on a daily basis that leads to Dark eye circles. It is dermatologically referred to as (periorbital hypermelanosis or periorbital hyperpigmentation. In this condition you look excessively tired, hungover or sad.

What are dark circles under your eyes?

Dark circles under your eyes mean the area of skin below your eyes looks darkened. This area may appear as shades of blue, purple, brown or black, depending on your natural skin color. Dark circles under your eyes may make you look tired or older.

What are the factors responsible for dark circle?

  • Hyperpigmentation is particularly known as hyperactive melanocytes around the eye area.
  • Volume loss -can lead to shadowing which appears as dark circles.
  • Venous pooling from allergies can give the appearance of dark circles.
  • It tends to be more common  in those with genetic predisposition and increasing age.
  • It can however be the result of other skin problems such as allergy, eczema, melasma or medical issues such as thyroid or hay fever.
  • Prominent circles can be the result of excessive pigmentation in the skin, loss of fatty tissue in the eyelid or around the eye, puffy eyelids, thinning of the skin.
  • Prominent shadowing due to skin laxity. Whilst these factors are partially controlled by one’s genetics other factors such as aging, smoking, fatigue, dehydration and even menstruation also have a part to  play.

Prevention and Solution

  • Make sure you are getting enough sleep each night for most people this should be about eight hours, poor quality sleep or lack of sleep can create dark circles.
  • Your diet should be healthy, limiting alcohol and salty food. These can cause dehydration and puffiness making dark circlers more prominent.
  • Ultraviolet light can make pre-existing dark circles worse so high factor SPF designs  for the eye area. Is an absolute must on a daily basis.
  • Lack of sleep and stress also seem to increase eye circle darkness probably due to poorer circulation during the time of stress
  • Oversleeping, extreme fatigue, or just staying up a few hours past your typical bedtime can cause dark circles to form under your eyes. Sleep deprivation can cause your skin to become dull and paler. The dark tissues and blood vessels beneath your skin can start to show.
  • Lack of sleep may also cause fluid to build underneath your eyes, causing them to appear puffy. The dark circles you see may actually be shadows cast by puffy eyelids.
  • Natural aging is another common reason for dark circles beneath your eyes.
  • As you get older, your skin becomes thinner. There may be a decrease in the fat and collagen that maintains your skin's elasticity. As this occurs, the dark blood vessels beneath your skin become more visible, causing the area below your eyes to darken.
  • Staring at your television or computer screen may cause strain on your eyes. This strain can enlarge the blood vessels around your eyes. As a result, the skin surrounding your eyes can darken.
  • Allergic reactions and eye dryness can trigger dark circles. When you have an allergic reaction, your body releases histamines to fight off the invader. This causes several symptoms, including itchiness, redness, and puffy eyes. Histamines also cause your blood vessels to dilate and become more visible beneath your skin.
  • Dehydration is a common cause of dark circles under your eyes. When your body is not well hydrated, the skin beneath your eyes begins to look dull and your eyes look sunken. This is due to the eyes' close proximity to the underlying bone.
